Chapter 2121 Direction of the Passage
Chapter 2121 Direction of the Passage
Governor Ding's face was full of embarrassment and urgency.
"This is really not my fault!"
Governor Ding took a half step forward, his voice trembling slightly, his cheeks flushed red, and even his ears felt hot: "That scoundrel Liu Jiulang has the gold medal, I was forced into this situation, I really had no other choice."
As he spoke, he wiped the sweat from his forehead, his eyes darting back and forth between Yan Ruyu and Huo Changhe, hoping to see a hint of relenting on their faces.
Yan Ruyu watched calmly. When she heard Governor Ding repeatedly emphasize "it was unavoidable," she slowly raised her eyelashes and a faint smile appeared on her lips. Before Governor Ding could say anything more, she gently waved her hand.
"We'll talk about this when we get back; there will be plenty of opportunities."
Governor Ding swallowed back the words that were on the tip of his tongue.
He opened his mouth, then looked embarrassed, lowered his head and stepped aside, his hands nervously clasped in front of him, no longer daring to say another word.
Chunni still held her head high, her eyes defiant, her gaze towards Yan Ruyu filled with wariness and resentment.
Yan Ruyu turned her gaze to her: "It doesn't matter if you don't admit that you have anything to do with Liu Jiulang."
"Aren't you interested in the Liu family's secrets? Today I'll grant your wish and show you with my own eyes."
Upon hearing this, Huo Changhe gave a wink to the soldier holding Chunni.
The two soldiers slowly released Chunni's arms.
Chunni flexed her wrists and quickly scanned her surroundings.
Yan Ruyu stood up, turned around and walked into the house: "Come with me."
Huo Changhe followed closely behind.
Just then, Chunni suddenly moved.
She had somehow already drawn the dagger hidden in her sleeve and swiftly swung it at the nearest soldier beside her.
The blade sliced through the air, carrying a chill. Caught off guard, the soldier's arm was slashed open, and blood gushed out instantly. He groaned in pain and took two steps back.
There was chaos.
Upon seeing this, the other soldiers immediately drew their swords and surrounded them.
Taking advantage of this brief opening, Chunni lightly leaped up, landing directly on the corner pile of firewood. With a leap, she grabbed the beam under the eaves and, in a few bounds, was already standing on the roof.
She stood on the roof tiles, her movements light and graceful, her gaze quickly sweeping across the surrounding streets and alleys, clearly very familiar with the governor's mansion and the surrounding terrain.
The tiles beneath her feet creaked softly as she stepped on them. Just as she was about to leap away, Su Zhenhai's furious voice came from behind her.
"Bring her back! We can't let her get away!"
As he spoke, he was about to draw his sword and chase after her. Several soldiers beside him were also about to act when they saw Chunni on the roof suddenly stop, as if she had been tripped by something. She stumbled and lost her balance.
She cried out in alarm, and her body tumbled uncontrollably off the roof, crashing heavily into the yard, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Yan Ruyu had already reached the door of the inner room when she heard the noise behind her and slowly turned around.
Moonlight filtered through the locust trees in the courtyard, casting a soft, silvery glow on her figure.
She looked at Chunni, who had fallen to the ground, and a cold smile curled at the corner of her lips: "You can't escape, why waste your energy?"
Chunni struggled to get up, but felt weak and sore all over, and an indescribable pain spread from her limbs to her bones.
It wasn't the pain from a fall, but a tingling, numb ache that seemed to seep from deep within the bones.
She braced herself against the ground, barely managing to lift her head. Her face was pale, and her eyes were filled with shock, anger, and confusion as she stared intently at Yan Ruyu: "What... what did you do to me?"
Yan Ruyu walked slowly back into the courtyard, stopped in front of Chunni, looked down at her with a calm and unwavering gaze, as if she were talking about something perfectly ordinary: "Which time are you asking about?"
She tilted her head slightly, her tone somewhat casual, "Was it when I first met you outside the city gate, or when I took you to eat at a street food stall later?"
She paused, her gaze sweeping over Chunni's increasingly pale face, and continued, "Or perhaps it's in this governor's mansion?"
Her smile deepened slightly: "Was it just now inside, when we lit that oil lamp?"
Chunni's face gradually turned deathly pale, devoid of any color. Her lips trembled slightly, and the arrogance in her eyes was replaced by astonishment.
She looked at Yan Ruyu, her eyes filled with disbelief: "You...you've been poisoning me all this time?"
“That’s right.” Yan Ruyu nodded frankly, her tone revealing nothing.
She bent down, her gaze level with Chunni's, and lowered her voice, carrying a hint of warning: "If you don't want to die from the poison so soon, stand up and follow me obediently."
Chunni gritted her teeth and tried to get up again, but the soreness and pain became more and more intense. Her limbs felt as heavy as lead, and she almost lost the strength to lift her hands.
She looked around and saw that the courtyard was already surrounded by soldiers, each holding a sharp blade and staring at her warily, forming an impenetrable encirclement.
She knew that there was no way to escape now.
If she hadn't been poisoned, given her familiarity with the area, she might have been able to find a way to escape.
But now, after being poisoned, she doesn't even have the strength to climb over walls or leap over ridges.
After a moment of struggle, Chunni finally faced reality.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to stand up despite her discomfort, and looked at Yan Ruyu with a complicated expression, filled with resentment and helplessness.
"Let's go." Yan Ruyu straightened up, stopped looking at her, and turned to walk back into the inner room.
Huo Changhe stood aside and instructed Su Zhenhai, "You and the others guard the outer room, be vigilant, and do not allow anyone to approach."
"Yes!" Su Zhenhai bowed and accepted the order, immediately arranging for soldiers to deploy defenses between the inner and outer rooms, his expression serious.
Huo Changhe followed Yan Ruyu into the inner room.
Two bodyguards followed closely behind, one on each side, escorting Chunni into the house.
Yan Ruyu walked back to the wardrobe.
Behind the hidden door lies a deep, dark passage.
Huo Changhe took a tinderbox from his waist, blew on it, and handed it to a guard beside him.
The guard took the lamp, picked up an oil lamp from the corner of the wall, lit it, and held it in his hand. The dim light illuminated the limited path ahead, making the rough texture of the mud on the inner wall of the passage exceptionally clear.
Yan Ruyu took the lead and stepped into the secret passage. The ground beneath her feet was flat, but she didn't know if there were any traps inside, so she didn't walk very fast.
My fingertips occasionally brushed against the wall beside me, feeling its cool, damp touch.
This passage is just a straight road leading forward.
She turned to look at Huo Changhe beside her, her eyes filled with a hint of doubt.
Huo Changhe understood what she meant and shook his head slightly.
Both of them were wondering where the passage they had painstakingly dug in the governor's mansion was going to lead.
