Chapter 219 A brief respite
Chapter 219 A brief respite
The night in the valley was exceptionally peaceful. The soldiers leaned against the mountain walls or lay on their mats, enjoying the rare peace and quiet. Cheng Yuwei and her adjutant carefully studied the map under the dim light of a lantern.
"Sister-in-law, although this valley is hidden, it is insufficiently supplied. If we stay here for a long time, we will soon be forced to evacuate due to the depletion of food and water." The adjutant frowned and said.
Cheng Yuwei pointed to a small town marked on the map and whispered, "There should be an enemy granary here. If we can successfully launch a surprise attack, it will not only solve the supply problem, but also weaken their logistical strength."
The adjutant hesitated for a moment: "But sister-in-law, that place is heavily guarded, and we are short of manpower now. It is too risky to act rashly."
Cheng Yuwei sighed softly and rubbed her brows: "I know, but staying here and waiting to die is not a solution. Tomorrow morning, I will lead a small team to conduct reconnaissance and confirm the target's defense situation. If conditions permit, we will act."
Seeing her determination, the adjutant could only nod and say, "Okay, I'll go with you."
A moment of emotion
Late at night, Cheng Yuwei walked to a corner of the valley and sat down to take a breath. The days of running around and making decisions had almost exhausted her physical strength, but she knew she couldn't stop.
Li Deshui came over with a cup of hot tea and handed it to her: "Sister-in-law, drink some to drive away the cold."
Cheng Yuwei took the teacup and smiled: "Thank you."
Li Deshui scratched his head, sat down next to her, and hesitated for a moment before speaking: "Sister-in-law, I've always wanted to ask, why are you willing to fight with a bunch of rough guys like us? You can obviously have a better life..."
Cheng Yuwei lowered her head and blew gently on the tea, looking into the distance with complicated eyes: "Everyone has their own responsibilities. I stay here not to enjoy life, but to protect those who can be protected."
Li Deshui's eyes flashed with admiration after hearing this. He whispered, "Sister-in-law, no matter what, we brothers will listen to you. Even if it means death, we will never hold you back!"
Cheng Yuwei put down the teacup, reached out and patted his shoulder: "Being alive is more important than anything else. Remember, this is not for me, but for everyone."
Preparation before action
The next morning, Cheng Yuwei selected a dozen agile soldiers to form a reconnaissance team and prepared to go to the market town.
"Sister-in-law, do you really want to go in person? If anything unexpected happens, our team will be leaderless." The adjutant said somewhat uneasily.
Cheng Yuwei shook her head firmly: "I won't go. I won't feel at ease. Besides, this kind of mission must be commanded by the person who knows the terrain and the target best. Don't worry, I will be careful."
The adjutant was helpless and could only remind him: "Then you must pay attention to safety. If you encounter danger, do not hesitate, retreat immediately!"
Cheng Yuwei smiled and said, "I understand."
Shadow of the Market Town
Led by Cheng Yuwei, the reconnaissance team spent a full half day quietly reaching the target location. They hid in a bush and observed the situation in the town from a distance.
The center of the town was a low warehouse, which, judging from the outside, contained a large amount of food and ammunition. There were at least two squads of soldiers patrolling the area, and sentries standing guard on the commanding heights.
"The defense is indeed very tight." Li Deshui whispered, "Sister-in-law, how do we start?"
Cheng Yuwei frowned and observed carefully for a moment before whispering, "Although the guards are strict, the enemy's vigilance is not high. Especially at night, there are obvious gaps in their patrol routes. If we can find an opportunity, approach the warehouse from the southeast, and then set it on fire, we can maximize the damage to the enemy's supplies."
Li Deshui nodded: "Sister-in-law, this method will work. However, in order to set the fire successfully, someone must be responsible for distracting the guards."
Cheng Yuwei's eyes darkened, and she said slowly, "Then we'll split into two groups. One group will be responsible for luring the enemy away, and the other will act quickly. But the prerequisite is that our evacuation route must be clear, otherwise, if we are surrounded, no one will be able to escape."
After completing the reconnaissance mission, Cheng Yuwei led the team back to the valley quietly.
Morale and determination
After returning to the valley, Cheng Yuwei gathered the entire team and explained the action plan in detail. After listening, the soldiers were very motivated and expressed their willingness to join the battle.
"Sister-in-law, just give the order! We brothers will never back down!"
Cheng Yuwei looked around, her eyes calm and steady: "This operation is very dangerous, I won't force anyone. If anyone wants to stay, I will never blame them."
However, no one retreated, and all the soldiers stood up, their eyes full of determination and trust.
"Alright!" Cheng Yuwei slammed the table, "Then let's act! Remember, victory is our only goal, but protecting ourselves is equally important."
Raid in the Dark
As night fell, the team split into two groups and quietly approached the town. Cheng Yuwei personally led the main attack group, while Li Deshui was responsible for the feint attack group to attract the enemy's attention.
As expected, a gap appeared in the southeast direction, and Cheng Yuwei and the main attack team successfully approached the warehouse. They carefully placed the incendiary device and quickly evacuated.
Not far away, the feint attack team began making noise, attracting the attention of most of the defenders. The enemy moved closer to the sound, unaware that the flames had already burst into flames in the warehouse.
A few minutes later, flames shot up into the sky, accompanied by a series of explosions. The food and ammunition in the warehouse were instantly reduced to ashes, and the town fell into chaos.
Cheng Yuwei retreated while commanding the team to provide cover. The enemy reacted and started to pursue, but it was too late to save the situation.
Dawn of victory
After returning to the valley, the soldiers cheered excitedly. This action not only successfully destroyed the enemy's logistics, but also greatly boosted morale.
Cheng Yuwei stood in the center of the team and smiled slightly: "We fought beautifully in this battle, but the battle is not over yet. The enemy will not give up, we must be prepared for the next step."
The cheers gradually died down, and the soldiers' eyes became more determined. They knew that the victory before them was only temporary, but as long as they had Cheng Yuwei's leadership, they would be able to overcome all difficulties.
