Chapter 157 Undercurrents Emerge
Chapter 157 Undercurrents Emerge
As the night deepened, the General's Mansion was completely silent. Cheng Yuwei was bent over her desk under the lamp in her study, fiddling with the records and accounts of the missing transports. She had a feeling that there was some key information hidden in them, but she couldn't figure it out for the time being.
"Are you still looking at these things so late?" A low voice came from behind.
Cheng Yuwei turned around and saw that Ling Xiaotian had changed into casual clothes and was leaning casually against the door frame, his eyes fixed on the account book in her hand.
"I always feel that something is wrong here, but I still don't understand where the specific problem lies." She put down the pen in her hand and rubbed her sore wrist.
Ling Xiaotian walked forward, took the account book from her hand, flipped through a few pages, frowned and said, "Don't worry about these things. I've asked someone to check. If you're too tired, go to bed early."
"But I think..." Cheng Yuwei wanted to say something, but he gently touched her forehead with his fingertips.
"My wife, when did you become so worried?" Ling Xiaotian said with a low laugh, "You are the Marshal's wife, not my adjutant. Just leave these trivial matters to me."
Cheng Yuwei rolled her eyes at him and said, "I'm not worried, I'm just worried that you'll be schemed against."
"Plotting against me?" Ling Xiaotian raised an eyebrow, then smiled, "The only person in this world who can plot against me hasn't even been born yet."
His tone was understated, but full of strong confidence. Cheng Yuwei looked at his confident expression and suddenly felt that she was indeed worrying too much.
"Okay, I don't care about this anymore." She stretched and stood up and said, "Then I'm going to bed. Don't stay up too late."
"Yeah." Ling Xiaotian responded and watched her leave the study before lowering his head to continue looking through the accounts, his eyes gradually becoming deeper.
Heartwarming moments for two people
The next morning, Cheng Yuwei slept until noon when she was awakened by a fragrant aroma. She opened her eyes drowsily and saw Ling Xiaotian walking in with a bowl of steaming porridge.
"Why are you here so early today?" Cheng Yuwei propped herself up and looked at him in surprise.
"Didn't you say you were tired yesterday? I'll let you rest for a day today." Ling Xiaotian placed the porridge on the bedside table, his tone filled with a hint of doting, "Drink the porridge first. I cooked it myself."
Cheng Yuwei was stunned when she heard this, and then her eyes widened: "You cooked it yourself? It's not poison, is it?"
"You don't have to drink it." Ling Xiaotian said lightly, reaching out to take the bowl of porridge.
Cheng Yuwei grabbed his hand and said, "No, no, no, can't I drink it?"
She took a sip of the porridge and found that it tasted quite good. She was a little surprised: "I didn't expect you to have such a skill."
"I told you, if you marry me, you won't suffer." Ling Xiaotian raised his eyebrows, his tone revealing a hint of pride.
Cheng Yuwei couldn't help but burst out laughing when she heard this: "How narcissistic! But this porridge is really delicious, I can only give you a good review."
Seeing the relaxed smile between her eyebrows, the coldness in Ling Xiaotian's eyes gradually gave way to tenderness. He sat down beside the bed and said softly, "Yuwei, you know, sometimes I feel very lucky."
"Lucky?" Cheng Yuwei looked up at him. "How can you be lucky for a warlord like you?"
"I'm lucky to have met you." Ling Xiaotian whispered, looking directly at her. "In this chaotic world, it's rare to have someone I'm willing to take off my armor for."
Cheng Yuwei's face flushed when he looked at her. She lowered her head and pretended to drink porridge, but she couldn't hide the curve at the corner of her mouth.
The approach of conspiracy
However, their brief and warm time together didn't last long. That evening, Ling Xiaotian received news that there was finally a lead on the missing transport team.
"According to the spies' reports, the missing transport teams were not accidents, but were ambushed and taken away," the adjutant said concisely.
"Ambush and take away?" Ling Xiaotian frowned. "Where are they transporting them to?"
"The exact location is unknown, but some military rations and bodies were found near the abandoned mines north of the city."
Cheng Yuwei happened to be passing by the study and couldn't help but stop when she heard this: "Body? How many clues are there?"
When Ling Xiaotian saw her appear, his brows furrowed even deeper: "You don't need to get involved in these dangerous matters."
Cheng Yuwei refused to give in: "Ling Xiaotian, I am not only your wife, I am also your partner. I have the right to know about this kind of thing."
Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, and finally told his adjutant's entire report.
After hearing this, Cheng Yuwei's expression grew serious. "Someone is targeting your army, even resorting to bloody means. There's definitely a bigger conspiracy behind this."
"I know." Ling Xiaotian stood up, his eyes as sharp as a knife. "It's fine if they don't move. If they do, I will make them pay the price."
Cheng Yuwei looked at his back, and a complex emotion surged in her heart. She knew that what they would face next was not just an ordinary enemy, but a bigger storm.
