Years turn into wind

Chapter 140 Victory of the War

Chapter 140 Victory of the War

The first rays of morning light shone across the battlefield, casting a faint golden glow over the fierce battle. After several hours of continuous attack, the enemy finally showed signs of fatigue. Their pace began to slow, and the soldiers' shouts became intermittent. A sharp glint flashed in Ling Xiaotian's eyes, and he realized that the opportunity for victory was right before his eyes.

"All troops, listen! Launch a counterattack and completely repel the enemy!" Ling Xiaotian's voice echoed through the city walls, instantly igniting the fighting spirit of the soldiers. The defenders' morale soared, and they raised their weapons and roared as they charged towards the enemy below.

Cheng Yuwei stood at the corner of the city wall, watching Ling Xiaotian's commanding presence with an indescribable emotion welling up within her. She understood that this man was not just a ruthless warlord, but a leader who shouldered the lives and hopes of countless people. Even amidst the raging flames of war, his unwavering presence remained resolute and reassuring.

The enemy commander, evidently sensing the reversal of fortune, had a sullen expression, his eyes filled with resentment. He waved his hand, signaling his soldiers to retreat. The enemy troops below the city began to retreat in disarray, their soldiers scattering in all directions, leaving behind a trail of corpses and lingering flames.

"We won!" The soldiers cheered, and the city was filled with the atmosphere of victory. Cheng Yuwei felt a sense of relief. She turned around and saw Ling Xiaotian walking towards her. The blood and dust on his armor couldn't hide the light in his eyes.

"Yuwei," Ling Xiaotian reached out and gently touched her shoulder, his voice low and gentle, "We did it."

Cheng Yuwei looked at him, tears welling in her eyes, a mixture of excitement and joy. She replied softly, "Yes, we did it together."

The two stared at each other in silence for a moment, the world seeming to fall silent in that moment. The clamor of the battlefield faded away, leaving only the sound of their heartbeats. Ling Xiaotian reached out and embraced her, gently holding her in his arms. The wind carried the scent of blood and gunpowder, but within this embrace, there was warmth and comfort.

"From now on, no matter how many storms we face, we will face them together." Ling Xiaotian's voice was firm, with unshakable determination.

Cheng Yuwei nodded and leaned on his shoulder, feeling the rare tranquility. But the cold smile of the enemy prisoner last night flashed through her mind, and her heart couldn't help but tighten: this battle is over, but the real crisis may have just begun.

At this moment, in a shadow in the distance, a pair of eyes stared at them, flashing with cunning and hatred.

As the sun rose, a new day began. The city's inhabitants busied themselves cleaning up the battlefield, comforting the wounded, and restoring order. Cheng Yuwei, following the medical team, shuttled among the wounded. A hint of fatigue crossed her face, but a determined glint shone in her eyes. She approached a soldier, leaning over to examine his wound. Her fingers touched the cold blood, and her heart tightened.

"Hold on, you will be fine." She comforted him softly, quickly took out gauze and medicine powder from the medicine box, and bandaged him carefully.

While they were busy, Ling Xiaotian walked over. He took off his armor and changed into a black military uniform, which made him look even more stern and handsome. He looked at Cheng Yuwei's busy figure from a distance, a hint of tenderness in his eyes. When he approached, he whispered, "You need to rest. A sleepless night is not good for your health."

Cheng Yuwei looked up at him and smiled: "The soldiers here need me more. Each of them is doing their best to protect this city. We can't let them down."

Ling Xiaotian was slightly stunned, and a warm feeling surged in his heart. He squatted down and helped her lift a wounded man, signaling the soldiers nearby to take over. Then, he reached out and grasped Cheng Yuwei's wrist, speaking softly but firmly, "I know your feelings, but you are also my dearest love. I can't let you get tired."

Cheng Yuwei's heart trembled slightly. Looking at his stubborn expression, she finally nodded and compromised: "Okay, I'll take a break."

The two walked to the edge of the city wall. A gentle breeze blew past, and the sunlight shone on them, seemingly diluting the traces of gunpowder. Cheng Yuwei leaned against the battlement, gazing at the mist between the distant mountains, but her heart was still worried about the looming crisis. She whispered, "Xiaotian, although we won the battle last night, I always feel that the enemy will not give up so easily."

Ling Xiaotian frowned, his expression suddenly becoming serious. He knew Cheng Yuwei never expressed her concerns easily, so this time her words must have a deeper meaning. "Are you saying they have a back-up plan?"

"Yes, when I was treating the prisoners, I heard them mention 'Night Shadow'. It seems to be an organization designed for lurking and spying, specifically providing intelligence to the enemy and creating chaos." A cold light flashed in Cheng Yuwei's eyes. "If they really have sneaked into the city, we must find them as soon as possible."

Ling Xiaotian clenched his fists, a plan already in mind. He whispered, "I'll arrange for a thorough investigation of the city, but you must promise me to stay in the mansion for the time being and avoid getting involved in any danger."

Cheng Yuwei chuckled: "Are you worried about me?"

"Of course." Ling Xiaotian said word by word, his eyes burning, "Your safety is more important than my own."

The air was filled with tacit understanding and warmth between them. The two were silent for a moment, as if seeking strength in this brief tranquility. However, no one noticed that at the foot of the city wall, a soldier in ordinary clothes quietly retreated, a sinister glint in his eyes.

The candlelight in the Marshal's Mansion flickered. As night fell, new dangers emerged in the darkness.

The night was deep, and the entire Marshal's Mansion, illuminated by the moonlight, appeared serene and solemn. Cheng Yuwei walked alone through the corridors of the mansion, her emotions as complex as the night itself. Ling Xiaotian's secret guards were silently patrolling the perimeter of the mansion, on high alert. She recalled her conversation with Ling Xiaotian that day, and a warm feeling welled up in her heart, but it was quickly swallowed by a sense of unease.

"Night Shadow," this mysterious name lingered in her mind. As someone who had received systematic scientific training in the modern era, she was well aware of the importance of intelligence and information, and the existence of "Night Shadow" was undoubtedly a huge threat to them.

"Miss, it's late, you should go to bed early." Xiao Tao, the personal maid, reminded quietly.

Cheng Yuwei nodded and was about to turn back to her room when she saw a dark figure flash by not far away and quickly disappear at the end of the corridor. Her heart tightened and she subconsciously wanted to chase after it, but Xiaotao grabbed her.

"Miss, no! That person's origin is unknown, you can't take the risk!" Xiao Tao's eyes were full of worry.

"We need to know the truth. We can't wait until danger strikes." Cheng Yuwei said firmly, breaking free from Xiaotao's hand and quietly following after her, lifting her skirt. A black figure swiftly crossed the corridor ahead, finally stopping in front of a sealed side door. It expertly pulled out a key and opened it.

Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat quickened as she cautiously approached, holding her breath to peek in. A dark figure entered the room and silently began rummaging through a pile of files, clearly searching for an important document. Her pupils narrowed slightly, and she thought to herself, "Oh no! This is Ling Xiaotian's secret study!" That dark figure must be a spy lurking in.

Just as she was about to quietly retreat and report, there was a slight sound of wooden planks beneath her feet. The dark figure turned back alertly, and their eyes met. The air seemed to freeze, Cheng Yuwei's eyes widened, and her breath caught.

"So it's you!" The shadowy figure was actually a servant she had seen before. He sneered and pounced on her.
