Chapter 87 The House Nobody Wants
Chapter 87 The House Nobody Wants
Before they knew it, it was the weekend. Sun Tiemei picked up Chen Shi in her car and prepared to go to Director Zhang's house.
As soon as the car turned the corner, Chen Shi suddenly felt something was wrong.
"Team leader, there's a problem."
Sun Tiemei followed his gaze and saw two men on the roadside carrying satchels, pacing around with their heads down the whole time, acting furtively, as if they were looking for something along the way.
"Those two are suspicious." Chen Shi lowered his voice. "I've been living and eating at the bureau lately, so they haven't had a chance. But as soon as I go out, they immediately follow me, which means they've been watching me all along."
Sun Tiemei also took it seriously and immediately pulled over to the side of the road.
Chen Shi stared at the rearview mirror. The two men, who had been looking down, glanced up at the car that had suddenly pulled over, then quickly turned their heads away.
At this point, Chen Shi was finally certain he hadn't misread it: "Team leader, should we get out of the car and question them directly, arrest them first and then discuss the matter?"
Sun Tiemei did not rush to get out of the car. She observed quietly for two seconds, then stepped on the gas and the car started moving.
You've been too stressed lately.
"Huh?" Chen Shi was taken aback.
"Those two are Yin Xiao GG's."
Chen Shi still didn't believe it, so he stuck his head out of the car window and saw the two men take out their personal stamps from their bags and quickly stamp the walls and railings with practiced ease, even shaking their heads as they worked.
Chen Shi was so angry that he immediately called the urban management officers to report it.
During this period, he stayed in the bureau for a long time and dared not go out. On the surface, he seemed normal, but in reality, he was on edge the whole time and was like a frightened bird.
The car arrived smoothly at Director Zhang's building.
As soon as Aunt Zhang opened the door, her face instantly lit up with a smile: "You finally decided to come! It's been so long since we had dinner last time, I thought you were deliberately cutting off contact with me, Tie Mei."
She reached out and took the fruit from Chen Shi's hand, led the two of them into the door, and then her gaze swept back and forth between them, her tone teasing: "Tie Mei, you're just being stubborn, still saying that Xiao Chen is just an ordinary colleague! I'm so old, what can't I see through? You've come to my house twice, and both times you brought Xiao Chen with you, haha, you little rascal."
Sun Tiemei and Chen Shi said in unison, "They really are colleagues."
"Okay, okay, colleague." Aunt Zhang looked at the two of them in perfect harmony and thought that young people these days are really stubborn.
Director Zhang then came out of the study wearing his reading glasses. He looked at Chen Shi next to Sun Tiemei. Although he was from the Logistics Department, he was still in the General Administration. He had heard a lot about the Linchuan Supernatural Ability Bureau recently, and he had inquired about the deeds of this young man.
He knew the two weren't in a romantic relationship, but he could also tell that Sun Tiemei's attitude towards this subordinate was somewhat different, though Sun Tiemei herself hadn't noticed. As an elder, Director Zhang naturally wouldn't explain anything to his wife, just in case the two of them ended up together.
After exchanging pleasantries, Aunt Zhang got up and went to the kitchen to cook, but her ears were already listening to what was happening over there.
"Uncle Zhang, we've come here to ask you for a favor. Chen Shi is in a rather special situation right now. The bureau's idea is to have him stay temporarily in the Superpower Apartment to ensure his personal safety, but Director Liu can't coordinate it, so we'd like to ask Uncle Zhang for help."
Before Director Zhang could speak, Aunt Zhang came running out with a spatula in hand: "My God, what kind of people are these days? They even dare to retaliate against people from the Supernatural Abilities Bureau! Is Xiao Chen alright?!" As she spoke, she looked at Director Zhang, "Old Zhang, Xiao Chen has had a tough time. It's rare for Tie Mei to ask you for help, so please take care of it."
Director Zhang remained silent at this moment.
Seeing his unhurried manner, Aunt Zhang immediately became displeased: "Old Zhang, what are you standing there for? It's no big deal! Last time, your elementary school classmate's daughter, who has absolutely no connection to us, casually asked you for a favor, and you readily agreed. Xiao Chen is one of our own, even from the same system as you. What's wrong with you helping to coordinate an apartment for her? You absolutely have to help!"
Director Zhang coughed repeatedly, thankful that he was still relatively honest, otherwise, with his wife's big mouth, he would have been in deep trouble.
Fearing that the couple would quarrel because of him, Chen Shi quickly tried to smooth things over, saying, "Auntie, you really don't need to feel troubled. I'm quite happy living in the office now. It saves me the trouble of commuting, and it's safe enough. I can manage perfectly well now."
Aunt Zhang glared at him: "Why are you being so polite, kid! You should fight for good things when you can. Director Liu has already agreed, why should you settle for living in his office?"
Director Zhang waved his hand, telling his wife to shut up: "It's not that I don't want to help, but apartments are indeed in short supply in Linchuan. Otherwise, Director Liu could have solved the problem himself. But speaking of apartments, we do have one that has been vacant for three or four years."
"There's a spare room, you old fool, why are you still hesitating..."
Director Zhang glared at his wife, and Aunt Zhang then slipped into the kitchen to continue cooking.
"Logically, it would be no problem to allocate it directly to you; it wouldn't be an exception. But this apartment is a special case, and I really don't recommend you move in."
"What's so special about it?" Sun Tiemei asked.
"This house is very unlucky." Director Zhang recounted the house's past. "The original owner of this apartment was a veteran field agent with a very high level of superpowers. He was quite famous in our Shannan area back then. Naturally, the bureau would value someone with such top-notch combat power. Although he never got married, his house was allocated to him very quickly, and he lived there until he retired. Then he passed away a few years ago."
"We thought that since the original owner had passed away, the house should be taken back, renovated, and allocated to someone else. In the past four years, six people have moved in, and without exception, three of them all had accidents."
"So fierce?"
"It's not a big deal, but he keeps breaking bones every now and then, and he'll suddenly get a high fever for no reason. He's also lethargic, and two of them almost got into car accidents."
"The first few people who moved in complained that something was wrong with the house, but others didn't believe it, especially those who had been waiting in line for years to be allocated a house. But after moving in, they all became unlucky. After it happened a lot, everyone said that the house was very unlucky. The General Administration of Customs and the Logistics Department of Linchuan City Bureau also sent people to check it, but there was nothing wrong. However, no one dared to apply to move in, so it has been empty until now."
Aunt Zhang, who was listening intently in the kitchen, rushed out as soon as she heard this: "Absolutely not! Xiao Chen, you can't live here! Your line of work is already dangerous enough, if you get stuck with an unlucky house, how will you survive? Old Zhang, you have to think of another way."
Director Zhang nodded: "That's the same concern of mine. The house is empty, and no one else dares to live there. It's not a big deal to allocate it to you, it's just the house itself."
After listening, Chen Shi understood: "Uncle Zhang, I'm not afraid of being unlucky, but you said everyone solves cases, and the most annoying thing is being punished. How come when it's my turn to solve a case, someone is even thinking of taking revenge? That's unlucky enough, isn't it?"
Sun Tiemei spoke up: "Uncle Zhang, I also think we should go and take a look. Since the General Administration has already inspected it, there shouldn't be any fatal danger. I'll go with Chen Shi to check it out."
Aunt Zhang objected, feeling that it was not good for young people nowadays to be so skeptical of superstitions.
Director Zhang looked at the two of them with surprise: "You should reconsider."
Sun Tiemei said calmly, "We've handled countless bizarre cases, and we've experienced scenarios a hundred times more dangerous than this apartment. This is nothing."
"My dear team leader, this isn't your place to live. What good is it if you're not afraid?" Chen Shi thought to himself, but he still spoke tough: "It's okay, Uncle Zhang, Auntie. I've been having bad luck lately, being targeted every day. How much worse can it get? What if moving in changes my luck?"
The two elderly people were amused by his optimistic attitude.
Chen Shi shrugged: "Besides, being afraid is useless. Instead of worrying about bad luck, we should solve the immediate security problem."
