Chapter 32 The Fairy Who Acted Righteously
Chapter 32 The Fairy Who Acted Righteously
Lin Ran was somewhat confused.
"I'm looking for someone. Have you seen Su Peixue?"
In just one day, Su Peixue became a prominent figure in the entire school; there should be no one in No. 5 Middle School who didn't know Su Peixue.
When Chen Leyao heard this name, she immediately scoffed.
"You're ridiculous. Pretending to be close to a beauty like Su Peixue, do you think that makes you look good? Last time she asked to borrow my study materials, I knew something was off. Borrowing materials, what an old trick. I told her then and there, don't use such a low-class way to strike up a conversation."
She paused here, then brushed a strand of hair that was hanging in front of her chest behind her shoulder.
"This time it's even more outrageous. They followed me all the way to the ancient city and then pretended to mistake me for someone else. And it's Su Peixue." She emphasized the name Su Peixue very clearly. "If you want to strike up a conversation, just be open and honest. Don't be so timid and try to drag other people into it. You're disgusting."
After she finished speaking, she lifted the hem of her pale purple skirt slightly, turned around, and walked away. Her steps were neither fast nor slow, and her back was very straight. After a few steps, she stopped again and turned half of her face to the side.
"Holy crap, is this guy out of his mind?"
Damn, what kind of genius is this?
Just then, Lin Ran suddenly heard someone shouting something ahead. The sound was mixed, and the specific content was unclear. But a few words were carried by the wind, intermittently.
"Drowning...rescuing...Hanfu (traditional Han clothing)..."
Hanfu (traditional Han clothing).
Lin Ran paused for a moment, then quickly ran towards the crowd.
……
Su Peixue surfaced from the water and took a breath.
Someone on the shore shouted, "Another person has jumped!"
"It's a girl!"
"She's wearing Hanfu!"
"That's too dangerous! Those clothes absorb water!"
Su Peixue didn't listen. She had already started swimming.
Her freestyle stroke was perfect; her arms moved in alternating strokes, her fingertips breaking the surface first upon entry, followed by her forearms, then her upper arms. Her leg kicks were small and steady. Her movements sliced through the river, leaving a white trail.
The Hanfu jacket floated in the water, the light blue gauze wrapping around her like a wisp of mist. The hem of her skirt sank underwater, pulled backward by the current.
She swam more than ten meters in less than twenty seconds.
"Help!"
The pregnant woman who had fallen into the water was still struggling. Her struggles were less intense than before, a sign of exhaustion. She was still flailing her arms, but no longer making any splashes; she was merely paddling on the surface.
Su Peixue approached her from behind. She couldn't approach from the front; a person falling into the water would instinctively grab onto anything, and both of them would sink.
She reached out a hand, slipped it under the pregnant woman's left armpit, hooked it around her shoulder, and lifted her head out of the water.
"Don't panic," Su Peixue said softly.
The pregnant woman was still struggling, reaching back to grab Su Peixue's sleeve. The sleeves of the Hanfu were wide, and the grip deformed easily.
"Don't panic, or we'll both sink," Su Peixue said again, this time a little louder. "I'll take you up. If you don't move, neither of us will sink."
The pregnant woman stopped grabbing. But her body was still trembling, she was breathing heavily, and a hoarse sound was coming from her throat.
"Look up," Su Peixue said. "Raise your head and look at the sky."
The pregnant woman, pale with fright, tilted her head back and rested it on her shoulder. Su Peixue switched to a sidestroke position, supporting the pregnant woman's chin with one hand to keep her mouth and nose above the water, while using her other hand to paddle and her legs to kick.
The two people moved towards the shore.
Tourists on the shore were flashing their phone flashlights incessantly, making the river surface appear and disappear intermittently.
Several other swimmers who were good at swimming also jumped into the water to help.
Before anyone could react, Su Peixue jumped down immediately, her reaction was incredibly swift.
There are always more kind people than pregnant women, so two or three people who were good swimmers jumped into the water, while others took long bamboo poles and stretched them toward the middle of the water, throwing lifebuoys into the middle as well.
Although the cruise ship wasn't particularly far from the shore, Su Peixue was already exhausted and extremely cold.
Her clothes clung to her body, were wet and incredibly heavy, and she felt like she was about to run out of strength.
Fortunately, two other swimmers swam over and helped pull the pregnant woman out of the water. They helped her hold onto a lifebuoy and then swam quickly to shore while holding onto a bamboo pole.
"come on!"
"Almost there!"
"Good job, girl!"
Su Peixue heard nothing. Her entire attention was focused on the distance between the person in her arms and the riverbank. The river water filled her ears, making the sounds from the shore muffled, as if muffled by a membrane.
The Hanfu was getting heavier and heavier. The water-soaked gauze and skirt felt like sandbags strapped to her body. Her arms started to ache, and she could no longer move her arms as she swam.
When Su Peixue reached the shore, her legs felt a little sore.
The pregnant woman was quickly helped by people on the shore. Some were shouting for someone to make way, some were asking if there was a doctor, and some were calling the emergency center. The pregnant woman's husband ran from the boat, his face pale, and knelt on the ground, holding his wife's hand, his lips trembling as he couldn't speak. The pregnant woman was spitting out water, coughing, and then crying. It was good that she could cry; it meant her airway was open.
Su Peixue stood in the water. Water dripped down her Hanfu, splashing softly. The light blue jacket had turned dark blue, clinging to her body, the embroidery gleaming in the water. Her heavy skirt trailed behind her as she took a few steps, the hem trailing on the water like a fish's tail.
Many people were taking pictures of Su Peixue with their phones, while also adding narration, saying, "This beautiful woman is really amazing. She jumped down to save people while wearing Hanfu. If it weren't for her, that pregnant woman would have been in danger."
Many people wanted Su Peixue to say a few words, but Su Peixue shook her head and politely declined without expression.
She had only acted on instinct, without considering it a significant matter. Right now, the most important thing for her was finding Lin Ran.
She walked back to the willow tree. The platform shoes were still there, and socks were still there too. She didn't wear them, just carried them in one hand, and picked up her phone with the other. She wanted to call Lin Ran, but found it was dead!
Many tourists were also following Su Peixue.
Someone walked towards her from the shore. A middle-aged man holding a phone, the camera pointed at her. "Young lady, you're amazing! Where are you from? What's your name?"
Another woman came along, livestreaming with a selfie stick. "Did you all see that? This is the fairy-like woman in Hanfu who saved someone! A pregnant woman! She saved a pregnant woman!"
Su Peixue turned her head away, not wanting the camera to capture her face. She walked towards the edge of the crowd with her head down. Some people offered her towels, others offered her bottled water, but she didn't accept them.
"Can I borrow your phone to make a call?" Su Peixue asked softly.
Although her phone was off, she could recite Lin Ran's number by heart; she had it memorized long ago.
As soon as Su Peixue said this, several cell phones were shoved into her hands.
Just then, Lin Ran walked through the crowd and saw the girl who was soaking wet.
