Chapter 12 Shen Yu, what exactly have you been through in these past 6 years?
Chapter 12 Shen Yu, what exactly have you been through in these past 6 years?
Taking a deep breath to suppress the surging emotions in her heart, she bowed slightly to Lu Zongming again, her tone sincere:
"Mr. Lu, thank you for telling me the truth, and thank you for helping me today. I will remember this favor and will definitely repay it when I have the chance."
Lu Zongming quickly waved his hand and said with a smile:
"Miss Jiang, you're too kind. Mr. Shen's business is my business. There's no question of whether he should repay me or not. Mr. Shen specifically instructed us not to cause you any psychological burden. He did all this willingly."
Mr. Shen clearly values Miss Jiang highly; he wouldn't dare put on airs in front of her.
Jiang Xinlan didn't say anything more, politely thanked Lu Zongming again, and then got up to take her leave.
As they stepped out of the Lu family villa, Zhao Feng hurriedly came forward and politely asked:
"Ms. Jiang, are you going back to the film set or your accommodation? I'll arrange a car to take you."
Jiang Xinlan was silent for a few seconds, then said softly, "Thank you for going back to my place."
She was going to find Shen Yu.
The car slowly stopped downstairs in the residential area. Jiang Xinlan thanked Zhao Feng, opened the car door, and got out.
Standing in front of Shen Yu's door, Jiang Xinlan took several deep breaths to suppress the surging emotions in her heart before gently knocking on the door.
The door opened after only three knocks.
Shen Yu stood behind the door, dressed in simple black casual wear, with a tall and straight figure and deep-set eyes.
Seeing Jiang Xinlan at the door, he showed no surprise, as if he had expected her to come.
He turned slightly to the side and said in a gentle tone, "Come in and sit down."
Jiang Xinlan did not refuse and stepped inside.
The house is a simple two-bedroom apartment, clean and tidy, with not much furniture. However, on the coffee table in the living room, there are two children's water cups and a pile of unopened children's toys.
Clearly, this was prepared for Niannian and Guigui.
Jiang Xinlan's gaze lingered on the toys for a moment before she looked away and turned to sit on the sofa.
Shen Yu poured her a glass of warm water and placed it on the coffee table in front of her. Then he sat on the single sofa opposite her, not too close, giving her a sense of security and boundaries.
There was a coffee table between them, and they remained silent for a few seconds.
Finally, Jiang Xinlan spoke first, "Shen Yu, I went to see Elder Lu today."
Shen Yu nodded, his tone frank: "I know."
"You asked Old Lu to help me with things on set, didn't you?"
Jiang Xinlan looked up at him, her gaze meeting his deep eyes.
"Yes." Shen Yu admitted frankly without any concealment.
"I asked Mr. Lu to take care of you and make sure you weren't mistreated on set."
There was no explanation, no claiming credit; he simply stated the facts calmly.
Jiang Xinlan's fingers tightened suddenly, gripping the hem of her clothes. She had imagined many possible reactions from him—perhaps an explanation, perhaps an apology and a plea for reconciliation.
But she never expected him to admit it so readily, so readily that all the words she had prepared were stuck in her throat.
She paused for a few seconds, took a deep breath, and finally asked the question that had been nagging at her all afternoon.
"Shen Yu, Old Master Lu said you are his savior. He was critically ill with a heart attack, and the hospital had even issued a death notice. It was your injection that pulled him back from the brink of death."
Her voice paused slightly, her eyes filled with undisguised shock and inquiry, and a hint of bewilderment she herself didn't even realize:
"What exactly have you been through in these past six years? How did you acquire such abilities?"
That's why she had to come to see him today.
She could accept that he disappeared for six years, that he had changed, and that he had his own secrets.
But she couldn't accept that she was facing a complete stranger, a man whose background she couldn't even figure out.
What's more, this man is the biological father of her two children.
She wants the truth, even if it's just a part of it.
Shen Yu looked at the stubbornness and wariness in her eyes and remained silent for a few seconds.
He had anticipated her question. Transmigrating to the cultivation world, cultivating for a hundred years, failing to transcend tribulation and then transmigrating back—these events were too bizarre, far beyond the comprehension of ordinary people.
If he tells her everything now, she won't believe him; she'll just think he went crazy after disappearing for six years and is making up ridiculous lies to fool her.
He couldn't tell her everything, but he would never lie to her.
Shen Yu thought for a moment and then changed the wording to something that would be acceptable to an ordinary person.
"Six years ago, I left Jiangcheng and had an accident on the way. I and my car overturned off a cliff. An old Chinese medicine doctor who lived in seclusion in the deep mountains saved my life."
"For those six years, I followed my master in the mountains to learn medicine and hone my skills. My master passed away recently, and I only returned to Jiangcheng after I finished handling his funeral arrangements."
"I saved Old Master Lu by chance when he was critically ill, and I helped him with the acupuncture techniques my master taught me."
Jiang Xinlan was stunned. She had considered countless possibilities, including the possibility that his disappearance back then was because he didn't want to take responsibility for her.
I wondered if he had encountered some enemies, or if he had run away because he owed money.
But I never expected this answer.
She looked at the man in front of her. His eyebrows and eyes still had the familiar features from six years ago, but the composure in his eyes and the restrained aura around him were completely different from the sunny and naive college student he was back then.
Six years of learning skills in the deep mountains and a brush with death are enough to transform a young man.
The biggest question that had been hanging over her mind all afternoon finally came to an end.
The previous anxiety and unease have disappeared, replaced by more complex emotions.
He survived a life-or-death accident and endured six years of untold suffering, but she also went through a lot of hardship during those six years, raising two children alone and enduring countless days and nights on the verge of collapse.
Fate played a cruel joke on both of them.
Jiang Xinlan looked at him, her emotions churning even more fiercely, but she remained calm on the surface:
"I understand. Anyway, thank you for helping me out of that situation. I'll remember this kindness and I'll definitely find a way to repay you later."
"But Shen Yu, I still stand by what I said. The six years we spent together, the hardships and suffering I endured raising two children alone, cannot be erased by a few secret favors."
I will not forgive you for leaving without saying goodbye back then because of these things.
She was grateful for his help, but she would not forget the past six years because of it.
She appreciates his affection, but that doesn't mean she can let go of the estrangement and grievances in her heart.
Jiang Xinlan is not a woman who can be easily appeased with a few favors.
Shen Yu looked at her, at how she clearly had grievances hidden in her eyes, yet still straightened her back and pretended to be strong, and felt a pang of heartache.
"Xinlan, I'm helping you not so that you'll be grateful, nor so that you'll forgive me immediately."
"It's because you are the mother of my child, the only person I, Shen Yu, have ever truly cared about in my life. This is all I should do. You don't need to feel any guilt, and you don't need to talk about repaying a favor."
Shen Yu gave her a deep look, his tone serious and unquestionable.
Jiang Xinlan looked at him, a slight stirring in her heart.
She had imagined many possible reactions from him—perhaps an explanation, an apology, or a humble plea for her forgiveness—but she never expected him to be so calm and composed.
He didn't force her to forgive him, nor did he try to take credit for it; he simply told her calmly that it was what he should do.
The anger in her heart inexplicably subsided a bit.
But she still didn't give in, only shifting her gaze to the window and softly saying:
"No matter what, I don't want to owe you anything. What happened back then is in the past, and the children have grown up. Let's just live our own lives."
Shen Yu looked at her deliberately aloof profile, remained silent for a few seconds, softened his tone, and took the opportunity to make another request.
"Xinlan, I know I have no right to ask you to accept me immediately, and I have even less right to interfere in your life."
"But Niannian and Guigui are six years old and have never met their father. I just hope you can give me a chance to spend time with my children and be a good father."
These words struck Jiang Xinlan's softest spot perfectly.
Her fingertips tightened suddenly, and her eyes instantly welled up with tears.
Yes, child.
Over the past six years, the people she has wronged the most are her two children.
Whenever Niannian sees other children being picked up by their fathers, she tugs at her clothes and whispers:
"Mommy, why hasn't my daddy come back from heaven yet? I miss him..."
Gui Gui never says it, but every time there's a parent-child activity at kindergarten, she secretly watches other children playing games with their dads, her eyes full of envy.
She could hate Shen Yu, she could refuse to forgive him, and she could never have anything to do with him again.
But she cannot deprive her child of the right to have a father.
Jiang Xinlan remained silent for a long time. Finally, she slowly turned her head to look at Shen Yu and said calmly:
"This weekend. You can come to our house this weekend and play with the kids all day."
Shen Yu was overjoyed. "Okay, thank you, Xinlan."
Sure enough, he was right. The children were the strongest bond between him and Xinlan. With Nian Nian and Gui Gui around, Xinlan would forgive him sooner or later.
"You're welcome."
Jiang Xinlan stood up, avoiding his gaze.
"I'm just giving the child a chance to spend time with you. It doesn't mean I've forgiven you, nor does it mean anything has changed between us."
"I understand." Shen Yu also stood up, his tone still gentle.
"I won't pressure you, and I won't cause you any trouble. I just hope to be by the child's side, and also... to be there for you."
Jiang Xinlan's heart skipped a beat, she paused, and then walked away quickly.
