Chapter 250 Attack on the Altar
Chapter 250 Attack on the Altar
That night, Lin Shushu and Mo Ze stayed overnight in Lanyue City. The night was not peaceful, and the guards of Lanyue City were dispatched several times.
Lin Shushu used her divine sense to discover that a small group of demons had entered the city, but they weren't there to kill; they were searching for something, so no one was injured. After being discovered by the guards, they immediately withdrew without lingering.
The next morning, all the cultivators in the city, whether they were disciples of sects or independent cultivators, were gathered together to be assigned tasks.
With Xiao Jingping's arrival, Qi Yun, the city lord of Lanyue City, felt reassured. He handed over the leadership of the battle against the demons to Xiao Jingping and summoned cultivators from all sides early in the morning, allowing Xiao Jingping to assign tasks.
Xiao Jingping handled the matter efficiently, and everyone accepted their orders and left. Finally, he approached Lin Shushu and Mo Ze and solemnly introduced himself.
"Greetings, fellow Daoists. I believe you already know my identity, but I would still like to introduce myself. I am Xiao Jingping, the eldest disciple of the Qingyun Sect Master. May I ask how you two should address me?"
His politeness was undoubtedly due to the fact that Lin Shushu's cultivation was no less than his own; his main purpose in asking was to ascertain Lin Shushu's background. As for Mo Ze, his relationship with Lin Shushu was obvious to outsiders, so Xiao Jingping didn't overlook him either.
Since the others were so frank, Lin Shushu and Mo Ze couldn't just ignore it, so they introduced themselves as well.
After hearing their introduction, Xiao Jingping thought even more highly of Lin Shushu. He hadn't expected that the woman in front of him would be a rogue cultivator. After seeing her cultivation level yesterday, he thought she was a descendant of some reclusive powerhouse, but it turned out she wasn't.
"What do you two think about taking charge of guarding the altar in the center of the city?"
Xiao Jingping was well aware of the altar's importance. Although he wanted to guard it personally, his presence would attract too much attention and could spark speculation, which would be disastrous if word got back to the demons. Of course, he wouldn't simply abandon the task; he would keep a close eye on the situation.
"Of course, no problem!" Lin Shushu readily agreed. She could tell that Xiao Jingping was very nervous about this place. Thinking of the rumors she had heard yesterday, she made a plan. It seemed that the Brahma Bowl was very likely hidden on this altar, which would save her the trouble of searching for it herself.
Lin Shushu had no interest in the Brahma Bowl; as long as it wasn't stolen by the demons, she didn't care where it was kept. However, if it involved information about teleportation arrays, then she would have to pay more attention.
When Lin Shushu and her group arrived in Lanyue City yesterday, a war had just taken place there. They thought the demons wouldn't make a comeback so quickly, but everyone was wrong.
After Xiao Jingping assigned his men, the demon army quickly launched another attack. Fortunately, Lanyue City was prepared, so the response was not rushed, and the demon army failed to set foot in Lanyue City.
In the center of Lanyue City, an ancient and solemn altar stands silently. The altar is built of huge black rocks, each stone bearing the marks of time, and the mysterious runes on them seem to tell ancient stories.
The altar is octagonal, with a thick stone pillar at each of the eight corners. The top of each pillar is inlaid with crystals that emit a faint blue light. These crystals echo each other, forming a faint light curtain that envelops the altar.
The altar was surrounded by a low stone wall, carved with various strange patterns. Beyond the wall lay a wide plaza, paved with smooth stone slabs, each engraved with intricate designs, seemingly guiding some mysterious force.
Lin Shushu surveyed the environment around the altar, carefully sensing the mysterious power. The power was sometimes strong and sometimes weak, carrying an ancient and vicissitudes aura, like an invisible thread that pulled at her thoughts, making her increasingly convinced that there was an inseparable connection between the Brahma Bowl and the teleportation array.
Just as Lin Shushu was about to grasp the key to that power, a strong dark aura suddenly spread from the edge of the square.
Mo Ze tensed instantly, drawing his longsword with a clear, sharp clang. Lin Shushu also snapped her eyes open, a flicker of wariness in them.
A black figure emerged from the darkness like a ghost and stopped not far from the altar. The newcomer was dressed in a black robe, his face hidden in the shadows, and he exuded a powerful aura that sent chills down one's spine.
His gaze was fixed on the altar, a cold smile playing on his lips. "I never expected that after searching for so long, one of the Brahma Bowls would be hidden here."
From the newcomer's appearance and words, it wasn't hard to guess that he was a member of the demon race. His ability to enter the city silently indicated he was a powerful figure. What alarmed Lin Shushu even more was that she couldn't discern his cultivation level. She cast a worried glance at Mo Ze, and both of them warily watched the newcomer.
The newcomer completely disregarded them, his disdainful gaze sweeping over the two before he unleashed a spell directly at the center of the altar.
A black beam of light shot towards the altar like lightning. Mo Ze and Lin Shushu were frantic with worry, trying to stop it, but it was too late. Just when they thought the altar was about to be severely damaged, something unexpected happened.
The previously empty ground slowly developed a groove under the impact of the black magic. The groove's walls were smooth, and its edges were covered with strange runes that shimmered with an eerie light under the illumination of the dark magic.
Upon seeing the groove appear, the powerful demon laughed out loud, "It really is here." With that, he reached out to take the item out of the groove.
Lin Shushu and Mo Ze were not about to let him succeed. Mo Ze flashed forward like a streak of light, attacking the demon expert. His longsword drew a sharp arc, creating a whistling sound.
The demon powerhouse remained calm, gently raising his hand. A black light barrier instantly condensed in front of him, easily blocking Mo Ze's attack. "You think you can stop me?" His voice was deep and cold, as if it came from the deepest hell.
Seeing this, Lin Shushu quickly condensed a ball of spiritual energy in her hand and joined the battle.
The demon powerhouse snorted disdainfully. He flashed away, easily dodging Lin Shushu and Mo Ze's attacks, and then stretched out a hand to grab the groove.
Just as his hand was about to touch the groove, the runes on the altar suddenly burst forth with a powerful light, blasting him away.
"What... what's going on?" The demon expert stared at the altar in shock, not expecting it to have such powerful defensive capabilities.
Lin Shushu and Mo Ze were also stunned by this sudden change, but it was a good thing for them, and they launched another attack on the demon powerhouse.
Lin Shushu continuously condensed clusters of spiritual energy, which, like twinkling stars in the night sky, shot towards the demon expert with immense power. The demon expert slightly shifted his body, easily dodging the attack. The spiritual energy clusters struck the ground beside him, instantly raising a cloud of dust.
Mo Ze, standing to the side, was not idle. He wielded his longsword with impenetrable speed, and sharp sword energies, like blades, pierced towards the demon powerhouse.
However, the power of the demon race was too great. Even under the combined attack of Mo Ze and Lin Shushu, he remained at ease, always managing to dodge Mo Ze's sword moves and Lin Shushu's spiritual attacks at crucial moments.
