Chapter 388 New Humans
Chapter 388 New Humans
"Hopefully we can find something new this time!" Zhang Yuan couldn't help but say as he set off.
The same expectation shone in the eyes of the others.
If only their team could find good stuff every time!
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Lin Mo asked cautiously.
"Mo, you're the luckiest person in our team. You'd better watch carefully later!" Chu Xin teased.
"I'll try my best!" Lin Mo thought it was something serious. Even if Chu Xin didn't say anything, she would still search for it seriously.
Putting her aside, I believe everyone in the team would be searching diligently as well.
It was scorching hot again. As soon as Lin Mo came out of the underground city, he felt the heat hitting him as usual.
Fortunately, the protective suit provided her with some relief from the heat.
This time, Jin Feng led them back to the same place as before, hoping that they would have good luck again.
"These earthen fruits again! Tell me, why do we have these things here? We can't eat them, we can't use them, they're just balls of dirt!" Zhang Yuan couldn't help but complain again.
"Perhaps everything exists for a reason!" Chu Xin said, while continuing to scan the ground with her eyes, afraid of missing anything.
"What nonsense! I don't see what use these clods of dirt are!"
Lin Mo listened to their conversation while diligently searching for something.
After searching for quite a while, we still couldn't find anything.
Unlike Lin Mo, who found nothing, Yu Yang was extremely interested in the architectural complex.
As they got closer, they saw the whole picture.
This is not an isolated gene bank, but an entire scientific research complex consisting of several domed buildings connected by passageways.
Most shockingly, a tower-like structure about fifty meters high stands in the center of the complex, with a faintly flickering blue light source at the top.
"The energy system is still working?" Cheng Hai said incredulously. "More than a hundred years have passed!"
Yu Yang's heart raced: "Pre-civilization quantum energy technology! The legendary almost perpetual clean energy! If this is true..."
“Then we may have found the key to solving the energy crisis of floating cities,” Cheng Hai continued, “but first we have to get in alive.”
They circled the complex and discovered an entrance at the base of the tower-like structure large enough for a submersible to pass through.
Cheng Hai carefully maneuvered the "Ghost" closer and used its robotic arm to clear away the seaweed and coral at the entrance.
“The structural scan shows that the interior is dry,” Cheng Hai said in surprise. “There is a complete airtight system.”
The gate at the entrance is rusted, but the emergency manual switch is still working.
Cheng Hai put on his diving suit and prepared to go out to operate.
“Be careful,” Yu Yang handed him a handheld sonar, “Retreat immediately if anything unusual happens.”
A few minutes later, with a heavy mechanical sound, the entrance gate slowly opened.
To their surprise, behind the door was an air-filled transition chamber, with the water level precisely controlled below the door.
“Incredible engineering,” Cheng Hai said as he returned to the submersible and removed his diving helmet. “These structures are designed specifically to withstand rising sea levels.”
They moored the "Ghost" in the transition compartment, waiting for the automatic drainage system to drain the seawater.
When the water level dropped to ankle depth, the door on the other side slid open.
The two picked up their equipment and cautiously stepped into the ruins of the pre-civilization.
The air inside was stale but still breathable, indicating that some kind of filtration system was still functioning.
The emergency lights on the wall provided a dim illumination, just enough for them to see their surroundings.
"This is... the living area?" Yu Yang shone his flashlight around.
The room contained simple furniture and equipment, all covered in a thick layer of dust.
There were even cups on the table, the liquid inside of which had long since dried up.
Cheng Hai checked a control panel: "Look at this logo—'New Pacific Biological Institute.' The top genetic research institution before the Great Flood. Rumor has it they conducted some controversial experiments."
They passed through several similar rooms and moved deeper into the complex.
As you get closer to the central tower, the corridors become wider and the equipment more sophisticated.
“The temperature is rising,” Yu Yang noticed. “There’s a heat source over there.”
After turning the last corner, they arrived at a circular hall—the very gene bank they had discovered yesterday, only this time they entered through the upper entrance.
The central cylindrical container remains intact, and the blue humanoid creature inside appears even more mysterious in the dim light.
"There's more than one," Cheng Hai said softly.
Yu Yang then noticed that there were dozens of similar containers of varying sizes arranged around the hall, containing all sorts of strange biological specimens.
Some are clearly genetically modified variants of marine life, while others resemble hybrids of humans and other organisms.
“They are really creating a new species,” Yu Yang said, walking toward the central control console and wiping the dust off the screen.
To his astonishment, the system was still able to start.
A password prompt appears, asking for biometric information.
“A retina or fingerprint is required,” Cheng Hai checked the interface, “security measures from a pre-civilization era.”
Yu Yang looked around and noticed a group photo of the researchers hanging on the wall.
The white-haired man standing in the center has the director's badge pinned to his chest, and the nameplate below the photo reads: Dr. Victor Lane.
“Try his workstation,” Yu Yang said, pointing to a more luxurious console in the corner.
Cheng Hai quickly disassembled the side panel of the control console and directly connected the circuit.
Give me a few minutes to bypass the security protocol.
Yu Yang continued exploring the hall, stopping in front of a smaller container.
The label reads "Project N-7: Aquatic Adaptation".
The creature inside the container was more human-like than the one in the center, except that it had webbed fingers and its skin had a faint blue tint.
Most disturbingly, its facial features reminded Yu Yang of someone.
"Old Yu! Come here quickly!" Cheng Hai's call interrupted his thoughts.
The console screen now displays a large number of files and charts.
Cheng Hai opened a folder labeled "Noah Project".
"Good heavens!" Yu Yang gasped.
The document details a global genetic modification program aimed at creating a human subspecies capable of adapting to a fully aquatic environment.
According to records, hundreds of volunteers had already undergone rehabilitation before the great flood.
"They foresaw rising sea levels," Yu Yang quickly glanced at the documents, "and believed that traditional human civilizations could not survive, so..."
“So they created a new kind of human,” Cheng Hai continued, “a new species that can live and breathe underwater.”
The screen suddenly flickered, and a progress bar popped up automatically.
"Downloading data to external device!" the system message indicated.
